Big iOS Titles Go Free As App Store Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Screen-Shot-2013-07-08-at-13.23.01-640x291

As the App Store’s fifth anniversary approaches, a whole host of developers have begun makes some of their most popular apps and games for iOS completely free. Some of the titles included in the sale are Infinity Blade II, Disney’s Where’s My Water?, and Traktor DJ, which is usually priced at $20.Big iOS Titles Go Free As App Store Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

It’s unclear whether the giveaways are to celebrate the App Store’s birthday, or whether the timing is just a coincidence. The Verge was first to spot the changes, and they note that none of the titles on sale have ever gone free before.

So this isn’t just your average App Store sale where the likes of EA and Gameloft make all of their older titles super cheap in an effort to boost sales. Some of the most popular iOS titles are included, such as gems like Tiny Wings and Day One, a wonderful app that makes keeping a journal super simple.

Here’s a full list of the titles that have gone free so far:

Apple hasn’t mentioned the freebies yet, and none of the apps acknowledge the reductions in their descriptions, so we can’t confirm why they’re been made free yet. But this week marks the App Store’s fifth birthday, and it certainly appears that this is part of the celebration.

If that is the case, we’d expect to see many more titles reduced in the coming days.

If you spot any other apps and games that have been made free this week, let us know in the comments section below.

Apple Launches Cheaper iPod Touch without Rear-facing Camera for RM799

ScreenShot002Apple has this morning added a new iPod touch to its online store that get rids of the rear-facing iSight camera in an effort to be cheaper. The device also has just 16GB of internal storage — half that of the regular iPod touch — but it is only RM799. Rm250 cheaper. The new model also comes in just one color — grey with a black front — and it doesn’t include the lanyard that comes with the regular model. Aside from those changes, the cheaper iPod touch is identical to its siblings; it has a 4-inch Retina display, a dual-core A5 processor, and a front-facing FaceTime HD camera for video calling and taking selfies. It also comes in the same 0.24-inch thick aluminum shell, and includes a pair or EarPods. You can pick it up at an Apple retail store starting tomorrow, May 31 or order online.

Check out the online store here.

Nokia’s answer to Lower-Mid range market with Nokia Lumia 620 priced at RM799

Nokia-Lumia-620-2

If you wanted to get a phone that do not break your bank and not entirely ready to give up on specs, the Nokia Lumia 620 might just be the answer. Well, the only thing you have to give in is that the Lumia 620 is running Windows Phone 8 OS. We are not saying that the WP8 is not a good OS, just that more people will be expecting an Android device and this will be a disappointment. WP8 is a very solid and gracefully simple OS a mobile device can have. The only downside of it is that it is not yet matured enough to compete with the likes of Androids and iOS in terms of their solid ecosystem and the amount of apps available for these platforms.

Apart from that, the Nokia Lumia 620 is a brilliant phone as far as value for money is concern. For just RM799, features a 3.8inch ClearBlack screen with 246 ppi, 7 interchangeable back covers to suit your moods everyday, 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon s4 processor with 512MB RAM together with 8GB onboard storage capacity expandable to 64GB via microSD card. Surprisingly, it also offers NFC (you dont really need it but some just likes it to be there) alongside with the 5MP camera with 720p video.

For RM799, the specs above are considered very good and could be a very good choice of a mid level smartphone despite the lack of LTE support and running WP8 (We honestly dont think WP8 is a con for this phone but we think most people do. If you do, you suck! =D). If Nokia is not for you, HTC offers a device, HTC 8S, almost similar to the Lumia 620 but with a larger 4inch display might get some of your attention. But well, it is not so worth your money priced at RM999 but it might look more stylish and slimmer.

Nokia Lumia 620 will be available tomorrow.

Maxis introduces new cheaper iValue Simple iPhone 5 Plan

ScreenShot1

Maxis just recently announces another plan to join the iValue plans for iPhone 5 coming this Friday. This plan will be targeted to the more budget tight market. The plan just requires monthly commitment of RM50 for a 12 months contract and you will get a small subsidy for your iPhone 5.

Phone 5 16GB – RM2,079
iPhone 5 32GB – RM2,339
iPhone 5 64GB – RM2,699
iPhone 4S 16GB – RM1,769
iPhone 4 8GB – RM1,239

The plan gives you 200mins to all operators, 100SMS to Maxis and 1GB data. It looks like a good solution for those who wanted to take Maxis line but doesnt want to pay RM100 or more a month. But if you take a closer look, after some calculation, it is not really worth it. [Click on the image for a closer look on the plan]

Here is why:

iValue 1:

1 year: RM1200 commitment + RM1699 iPhone price = RM2899

iValue Simple:

1 year: RM600 commitment + RM2079 iPhone price = RM2679

The iValue 1 is just RM220 more expensive than iValue Simple which is around RM18 extra/month. With that, you will get more calls, SMS, and data. I think the iValue Simple is just not that simple after all. If you really want to get a cheaper monthly commitment plan, go for Digi’s iDigi 88 plan. That is a better choice. But you have to sacrifice internet speed and coverage for that. SO the choice is yours!

Check out plans from Digi and Celcom!

Sony Xperia Tipo now priced at just RM499

Sony has officially announced the availability of its single SIM Sony Xperia tipo in Malaysia at the price of RM499. This is one of the cheapest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smart phone you can get right now. The Xperia tipo comes after the Xperia tipo dual that comes with dual-sim support, priced at RM559.

To recap the specs, it is powered by a modest 800MHz Qualcomm processor, 512MB of RAM and 2.9GB of storage which is expandable with microSD. The front has a 3.2″ TFT display that does 480×320 pixels resolution. It comes with a 3.2MP camera that shoots VGA resolution videos. Powering the device is 1,500mAh battery which is rather generous for a entry level device.

Overall it weighs 99 grams and has a thickness of 13mm. Three colours are available – Classic White, Deep Red and Navy Blue. For a limited time, Sony is also bundling a CTIA stereo handset worth RM75. Visit the Xperia tipo page for more info.

We think that Sony devices are great. They are well built and feels good in your hand unlike plasticky feel Samsung devices. This will prove to be a strong competition for Samsung’s Galaxy Y which dominates the entry level market now. Lets see what happens now.

The iPad mini event is over and much have been talked about especially on all the products Apple introduces in one event! We have a list of products Apple shows to the world in the event and iPad Mini, the long awaited iPad Mini is one of them. Yes, there are also iMacs and MacBooks. Chill.

Rather than going all over the internet for all the post about the Apple event, we found an awesome round-up of the event by Cult of Mac which gives a complete round-up of the event. Enjoy!

Complete pricelist of iPad mini line-up: Pricing starts at RM761 [Unconfirmed]

Many have been wondering how much will the iPad mini cost when it hits the market. Will it be competitive in the 7-inch tablet market? Well we hope so.

Recently there is a complete line up of the iPad mini prices published in a German weblog. The price looks very competitive to us. You can actually get a 64GB version iPad mini for a price lower than a 16GB iPad 3rd Gen. Provided if you are not concerned about the smaller screen.

Here is the list:

  • 8GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in Black – $249 (RM761)
  • 8GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in White – $249 (RM761)
  • 16GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in Black – $349 (RM1067)
  • 16GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in White – $349 (RM1067)
  • 32GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in Black – $449 (RM1373)
  • 32GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in White – $449 (RM1373)
  • 64GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in Black – $549 (RM1680)
  • 64GB iPad mini Wi-Fi in White – $549 (RM1680)
  • 32GB iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular in Black – $549(RM1680)
  • 32GB iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular in White- $549 (RM1680)
  • 64GB iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular in Black – $649 (RM1985)
  • 64GB iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular in White- $649 (RM1985)

We assume that Cellular means we will be able to make phone calls from it. But dont keep your hope up just yet because this might not be true or it might just not work in countries other than US or Canada. But overall, we think the price is very competitive and we will see a huge sales of this device in the holiday seasons.

What about the rumored 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

What you think about the price? Worth considering?

*We hope the currency used is USD and not Euro. If it is Euro, the cheapest iPad will cost around RM987. Which is still cheap in our opinion. But not that competitive anymore. But anyway, the price will be revealed soon (23rd Oct). So stay tuned.

*Pricing converted in current conversion rate in a direct conversion.
