Wikipedia took the English language site offline to show protest against the US anti-piracy law. And since then, this topic raises to be one of the hottest topics in Facebook and Twitter.
They said that the US anti-piracy law could “fatally damage the free and open internet” and “severely limit people’s access to online information”.
If you go to Wikipedia, all you can see is a blackout page with a huge letter W and words that says,
“Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge”
“For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history,” reads the message, adding that the website will still be available on smartphones and mobile devices. “Right now, the US Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia.” Click here!
The message on the blacked-out Wikipedia site continues: “Wikipedians have chosen to black out the English Wikipedia for the first time ever, because we are concerned that Sopa and Pipa will severely inhibit people’s access to online information. This is not a problem that will solely affect people in the United States: it will affect everyone around the world.”
